S3: Steuben Science Summer 2011

The Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes and NASA awarded grants to the Ying TRSEF launching the first Steuben Science Summer!

This summer, Steuben County will be The Place To Go for fun things to do about science, technology, engineering and mathematics — STEM. And we mean LOTS of fun!

Here’s what has been scheduled by the Ying TRSEF:

Tuesday, July 19
Tanglewood Nature Center – Even before we officially begin Steuben Science Summer, the Ying TRSEF will host a cybertalk with the girls in TNC’s Meg Lowman Tree Tops Camp. TNC staff have even offered to serve as mentors for the girls’ science fair projects!

Friday, July 29
SciFair at Wings of Eagles – The culmination of a month’s work by teams of students from Steuben and Chemung Counties. Don’t miss these great kids!
Hornell Rotary Club – “Our children’s future!” presentation – noon at JC’s Cafe in Hornell. Rotarians’ commitment to education and leadership is a perfect match with encouraging youth to discover their talents in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Saturday, July 30
“S3 Grand Opening” at Mossy Bank Park in Bath from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. From peeking in on osprey and eagle nests with Dr. Randy Weidner to discovering wildlife photography with John Adamski to observing the Milky Way at new moon with observatory manager Greg Longwell, you will find wonderful adventures waiting for you!

Monday, August 1
“Science, engineering … and young people” is a teacher and informal educator professional development workshop at Pinnacle State Park in Addison 10:00 a.m. – noon. Great info re NASA and science fairs, and refreshments for all. *** First 15 registrants receive $50 stipend *** That includes teachers, librarians, youth organization staff and leaders, and museum or nature center staff.
Hornell Area Concern for Youth “Finding Nature in the City” offers local youth an afternoon of exploring the city environment and local agriculture, developing science fair plans … and receiving a plant for their new camp!

Tuesday, August 2
Cooper Summer Learning Experience seminar “What’s your dream?” will introduce selected students to how science fair mentors can help them explore their futures.
Cohocton Summer Learning Experience seminar “What’s your dream?”
Hornell Summer Learning Experience seminar “What’s your dream?”
Science fair mentors and my future – A homeschoolers’ seminar seminar for middle and high school youth at the library in Corning
Prattsburgh Rotary Club – “Our children’s future!” presentation with DEC Forester John Gibbs – 6:30 p.m. at Feather Tick ‘n Thyme

Hammondsport Rotary Club – “Our children’s future!” presentation – 6:00 p.m. at Hammondsport Library

Corning Youth Center “Finding Nature in the City” offers local youth an afternoon of exploring the city environment and local agriculture.

Saturday, August 6
Streetside Science at Addison Apothecary
The Ying TRSEF will host an “Adventure Table” with surprises that send families home with great ideas for exploring the wonders around us.

Sunday, August 7
“S3 Grand Finale” at Mossy Bank Park in Bath from noon to 2:30. From a model of the solar system nearly a quarter mile long to … (shh, the rest will be a surprise from NASA), our last S3 fling will engage all ages. Plus we’ll host a Bar-B-Que. You bring your drinks and treats, we have the meat and rolls. Children who have participated in an S3 program will have coupons for FREE barbecue!
