Ying TRSEF Awards Package for local science fairs
The TRSEF will provide a package of awards at no charge for local fairs within its 24-county territory. Please email the Ying TRSEF today to request this service. You will receive full-color certificates in presentation folders and judging guidelines for each award.

Rube Goldberg Machine Contest

Our SUNY Buffalo Rube Goldberg Machine Contest team represented Upstate NY at the RGMC Nationals at Purdue and took third place with TWO perfect runs.
Eva Greenfield (lead), Tawfiq Afif, Michelle D’Lima, Ian Duncan, Brian Morgan, Vini Patel, Yalei Song, Brett van Groenewoud, Alexis Wong, Habib Younus invented a great design, culminating in the burping out of hand sanitizer from a very distinguished PINK PIG!

Ying Scholar Competition Awards

Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded for the winners of the Ying Scholar Competition.

Ying TRSEF Fair Awards

One third to one half of the actual competition exhibits about experiments will receive a Ying TRSEF award. Three levels of Ying TRSEF awards are given to Research Students based on the following criteria:

  • Honors: The student has made an above-average effort in demonstrating a scientific principle.
  • High Honors: The student shows a good understanding of scientific methodologies. The exhibit, oral presentation and research paper show well-above-average effort, attention to detail, and level of interest.
  • Highest Honors: The student shows a clear, in-depth understanding of scientific methodologies. The exhibit, oral presentation and research paper show superior effort, attention to detail, and level of interest.
  • Broadcom Masters Select projects at the Junior Level will be advanced to the national Broadcom Masters.
  • New York State Science and Engineering Fair: One Senior Level exhibitor will represent our fair at the New York State Science & Engineering Fair in New York City.
  • Grand Awards: Senior Level exhibitors with the three top-ranked projects will represent our region as Finalists at the International Science & Engineering Fair in Los Angeles, California. The Ying TRSEF covers all the expenses for the week-long trip in May. (Note: Both AP and IB exams are offered on site for the ISEF finalists.)

For Poster Presenters, awards include Poster Commendations for roughly one third of the students, and one Best of Fair Honors award.

2011 TRSEF Special Awards (watch for updates)

  • County Science Champions: We have funding to award a $100 prize to the student who scores highest in first-round judging from five counties. We are looking for 19 more $100 sponsors so every county can have its own champion. (Students advancing to NYSSEF, ISEF and Ying Scholars will not be eligible for this award.)
  • “Make a Difference” Award: The Emma Ernstsons Award commends a student whose research could “change the world for the better.” (Ms. Ernstsons was a school teacher who fled from Latvia with her photographer husband, arriving as a refugee in the US via England after World War II.)
  • Onondaga Community College Scholarship: The College’s Continuing and Extended Learning division will award one FREE three-credit college course (online or on campus) to a student selected for his/her marked and enthusiastic determination to learn.
  • Selby Hancox Memorial Award for Independent Technical Achievement: The Hancox Memorial Award highlights technical creativity in the development of a distinctly different procedure or the design and construction of a unique apparatus by the student.
  • Tri Region Award for Curiosity: This Fair Award commends students in the TRSEF Poster Competition who respond clearly to the charge to explore one’s world with enthusiasm.
