Ying TRSEF Awards Package for local science fairs
The TRSEF will provide a package of awards at no charge for local fairs within its 27-county territory. Please email the Ying TRSEF today to request this service. You will receive full-color certificates in presentation folders and judging guidelines for each award.
Ying Scholar Competition Awards
Two $1000 scholarships will be awarded in 2010 for the winners of the Ying Scholar Competition. Dr. Ying will be in Syracuse himself to present the scholarships!
Ying TRSEF Fair Awards
One third to one half of the actual competition exhibits about experiments will receive a Ying TRSEF award. Three levels of Ying TRSEF awards are given to Research Students based on the following criteria:
- Honors: The student has made an above-average effort in demonstrating a scientific principle.
- High Honors: The student shows a good understanding of scientific methodologies. The exhibit, oral presentation and research paper show well-above-average effort, attention to detail, and level of interest.
- Highest Honors: The student shows a clear, in-depth understanding of scientific methodologies. The exhibit, oral presentation and research paper show superior effort, attention to detail, and level of interest.
- Young Scientist Challenge: Select projects at the Junior Level will be advanced to the national Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
- Grand Awards: The first and second place Senior Level exhibitors will represent our region as Finalists at the International Science & Engineering Fair in Palo Alto, California. Third place will serve as the alternate, in case one of the Finalists cannot attend ISEF. The Ying TRSEF covers all the expenses for the week-long trip in May. (Note: All national AP exams are offered on site for the ISEF finalists.)
For Poster Presenters, awards include Poster Commendations for roughly one third of the students, and one Best of Fair Honors award.
2010 TRSEF Special Awards (watch for updates)
- County Science Champions: Our goal is to award a $100 prize to the student who scores highest in first-round judging from each county. (Grand Award winners advancing to ISEF and Ying Scholars will not be eligible for this award.) Dr. Ying has created a five-award pool for which students from all non-sponsored counties are competing. We have specific sponsors for County Science Champions from:
- Allegany County (Dresser-Rand)
- Cattaraugus County (Dresser-Rand)
- Chemung County (Dresser-Rand)
- Jefferson County (Jefferson County Job Development Corp)
- Steuben County (Community Foundation of Elmira-Corning) - Howe Caverns Award: Details when available.
- Kopernik Observatory Award: Details when available.
- “Make a Difference” Award: The Emma Ernstsons Award commends a student whose research could “change the world for the better.” (Ms. Ernstsons was a school teacher who fled from Latvia with her photographer husband, arriving as a refugee in the US via England after World War II.)
- Onondaga Community College Scholarship: The College’s Continuing and Extended Learning division will award one FREE three-credit college course (online or on campus) to a student selected for his/her marked and enthusiastic determination to learn.
- Paleontological Research Institute / Museum of the Earth Award: Details when available.
- Selby Hancox Memorial Award for Independent Technical Achievement: The Hancox Memorial Award highlights technical creativity in the development of a distinctly different procedure or the design and construction of a unique apparatus by the student.
