Welcome!

From top clockwise: All of the Science Fair students celebrate Dr. Ying's coming to Syracuse; our Ying Scholars, each receiving $1000 scholarship; our University at Buffalo Rube Goldberg Machine Contest team whom we advanced to RGMC Nationals; MaxMan Reptile Rescue, part of Saturday's Science Fest.
Onondaga Community College will open its campus to the Ying TRSEF on March 19 and 20, 2011. So, students, parents and teachers, update your calendars because we will have a wonderful fair waiting for you in Syracuse! AND … the new algorithm to determine how many projects we may bring to ISEF allows gives us THREE PROJECTS, no distinction made about individual or team. So in 2011, expect to see at least three students called forward as Grand Award Winners and ISEF Finalists!
Awardees
Ying Scholars
Congratulations to Ying Scholars Kainath Ahsan (Suffern High) and Dana Hogan (Buffalo City Honors), each awarded a $1000 scholarship by Dr. Ying. Exemplary defenses were made by all five Finalists, also including Ryan Crist (Union-Endicott High), Mimi Frisch (Buffalo City Honors) and Carrie Wang (Suffern High).
ISEF Finalists
Phoebe Kurtzman (Suffern High) and Jimmitti Teysir (Buffalo City Honors) were initially declared our Finalists. When Jimmitti declined due to her International Baccalaureate examinations during ISEF week, Alternate William Chauvin (Valley Central High) became a Ying TRSEF Finalist. Moving into the alternate slot then was the team of Fiona Hennig and Rasheen Powell (Buffalo City Honors). The second round ISEF judging team felt that this, our first senior team ever, was outstanding, and since our international affiliation allowed two individual and two team finalists, we should immediately announce advancement of this team to ISEF as well. Who argues with an inspired group of judges? For that matter, who would want to? Our Committee looked at our finances, made some calls, and decided to take the leap — all four students and their teachers will be in San Jose in May!
Rube Goldberg Machine Contest
Our SUNY Buffalo Rube Goldberg Machine Contest team represented Upstate NY at the RGMC Nationals at Purdue with TWO perfect runs. Our first RGMC College Team — Eva Greenfield (lead), Tawfiq Afif, Michelle D’Lima, Ian Duncan, Brian Morgan, Vini Patel, Yalei Song, Brett van Groenewoud, Alexis Wong, and Habib Younus — created a fascinating design, culminating in the burping out of hand sanitizer from a very distinguished-looking PINK PIG. What a great debut for Rube Goldberg in Syracuse!
Dr. Nelson Ying joined us for the entire Fair, from Saturday’s Ying Scholar Finals and the round of special events to Sunday’s fair and Awards Ceremony. He was so taken with the work and creativity of students, the caliber of our judges, and the dedication of the volunteers that he doubled the Ying TRSEF funding for 2011. Are you surprised that our brave Committee immediately said “yes” to his challenge?
Of course, this means that we will need to raise another $15,000 in order to match his grant. Will you help? We need contacts now in professional associations, corporate offices, community and private foundations, and among potential private donors. Please email the Director today with your suggestions … or your pledge!
